![]() ![]() The denotative meaning is “a thick mass of coagulated liquid”, this can be in reference to anything, blackberries, damp leaves, and so on. The first word that stood out to me in “Blackberry-Picking” was “clot” in line three. While at first glance it seems that the first stanza is a happy memory, followed by the aftermath which demonstrates how quickly happiness can fade, but the specific words and the personification in the first stanza make it subtlety dark as well. And my first reading of the first stanza really brought me back to a part of my childhood, but after the second stanza and rereading it a few times this poem is a lot darker than I originally thought. ![]() I choose this poem because when just looking at the title of our two options, “Blackberry-Picking” stood out to me because it instantly made me think of my childhood and pulling over to the side of the road to pick the blackberries that grow in abundance in the Pacific Northwest. ![]()
